Polytechnics wont be converted to a UNiversity

October 5, 2007 by Fadzuli

I’ve been following this news lately and finally yesterday the decision made on channelnewsasia that mentions that Singapore will not convert the Polytechnics to become a 4th University.

and click the image as shown below.

Personally I think its a good move. Why? I was from both the Poly (NYP) and Uni (NUS) and I saw the education systems on both end and till today I still prefer the Poly education.

Its much slower and easier to pick up rather than in University where they thrash things to you and you learn everything on your own. We pick up real skills in Poly - hands on practical education ( yes sometimes they feed you answers ) and i can tell you this that going to UNI does not guarantee that you come out with a skill. You end up being jack of all trades but master of none. There are times that you study useless modules that you don’t even apply it to the real world. You read papers that eventually end up in the thrash bin. So is it worth the paper chase.

The huge advantage though in being in Uni is the level of knowledge that you can gain. In Poly hardly you can see intellectual discussions and sharings going on but in Uni yes you do get these perks. Then again too much knowledge which are not applied will also end up being useless.

“Applied knowledge is the key to making changes in our lives and in this world…”

Personally i think that its a good move to make the Polytechnics stay as Polytechnics. Pushing them up will only force the students to be in stressful situations and you will end up losing creative people. And yes we need more creative and enterprising people. Not people who just wish to get a job when they graduate.

Dr Tony, “I would be more worried that they will be less graduates in the future”.

Hmm i was like Hello…I think there would be more graduates then now and there will also be higher unemployment among them. Can’t you see everyone wants to get that so called paper the degree. The playing field will definitely be leveled.

..Sorry I’m being very negative about university education but this is how i feel.

the dropout!!
