Well if you have ever watch the Apprentice, the leader of each team - Project Manager is required for every project that was to undertake. Usually they would get the X if their team loses. This posts is about project management because as an Entrepreneur, we need to take on this role whether we like it or not.
So what does it takes to do take on the role of Project Manager in the Web Development Business. Well firstly you need the customer base or people that would engage you. You have to do the marketing…
Secondly you need to have a pool of designers, coders in your contact list. Why one not enough meh? Honestly nope its not enough cos each of them have their own timings and they might be busy with their own clients work. So yeah you do need a bunch of them in case projects come in like nobody’s business.
Thirdly you need to have the knowledge of these designers and coders else they will think that you are joke. I know of some project managers who know nuts about web designing and they give unrealistic expectations to their fellow designers. When you are the project manager you need to deal with the client right. That is why knowledge and experience is important so that you can tell your clients what can be done and what cannot be done.
Fourth - Be the chaser…You have to chase for things else things can’t finish. You have to chase both your clients and your designer, coders for everything..
Fifth - Administration -> I think most guys would hate this role because there’s few things to do actually. examples are invoicing, draft letters etc etc.
What I’m showing you is based on outsourcing concept. Personally I don’t have any FULL TIME designers or coders. Most of them are freelance.
So at the end of the day. How much does the project manager earn? Well I can say usually its around 20%-30% of the whole package. Its a little though but consider these thought. If you have 3-5 projects and each one cost you $700 to $1500. That would be quite a sum right?
Honestly its hard work but it you love what you do does it matter?
